Rip Hunter is a time-traveler from the future who appears in the Arrowverse television franchise, primarily in The CW's Legends of Tomorrow. He's portrayed by actor Arthur Darvill.
Hunter travels to the past to recruit a team of heroes and villains to prevent a catastrophic future event. While his initial motivations are presented as selfless, seeking to save the world from the immortal Vandal Savage, it's later revealed he also has personal stakes due to Savage's destruction of his family in the future.
He acts as the initial captain of the timeship Waverider and leader of the Legends. Although his leadership style is often questioned, and his plans are frequently shrouded in secrecy, he ultimately seeks to protect the timeline. His first appearance is in Legends of Tomorrow, season 1, episode 1.
